Study space

Study space turns a source into material that you can learn from. It can make a study plan, a reading, flashcards and a quiz. It also brings cards back on a schedule, so you review them before you forget them.

Open Study space

You can open Study space from two places. The first place shows the study material for all your threads. The second place shows the study material for one thread.

  • All threads: select Study space in the sidebar of your home page.
  • One thread on a computer: select Study space in the toolbar of the thread. It opens beside the chat.
  • One thread on a phone: select Study in the thread. If you do not see it, open More views.

Study space has a Beta label. Some details can change while we improve it.

The four kinds of material

  • Study plan: the whole source, section by section. Each section has a reading, flashcards and a quiz.
  • Reading: a clear lesson that Gistr writes from the source.
  • Flashcards: cards that come back just before you forget them.
  • Quiz: questions that show what you remember.

Use a study plan to learn a full subject or to prepare for an exam. Use one reading, one set of flashcards or one quiz when you have less time or a smaller topic.

Make a study plan

  1. In Study space, select Create new.
  2. Select Study plan, then choose a source. You can add a new source if you do not have one.
  3. Choose the sections that you want to study, or select all. A plan can have up to 30 sections.
  4. Tell Gistr how well you know the topic (see below).
  5. If you have an exam, select I have an exam or deadline and set the date.
  6. Select Create plan.

Gistr writes the sections after you select Create plan. A section opens when its parts are ready. You can close the page while Gistr works.

The level options are:

  • I'm new to this, start from scratch
  • I know the basics, help me go deeper
  • I know it well, just want a refresh. A plan at this level has no readings.

If you are not sure, select Check my level. Gistr asks you some questions and then suggests a level. You can change the level before you continue, or select Skip check.

Make a reading, flashcards or a quiz

The steps are the same as for a plan: select Create new, select the kind of material, then choose a source and sections. The options on the next step are different.

  • Reading: choose the amount of detail. Compact, just the key ideas is short. Detailed, with explanations and examples is longer.
  • Flashcards: choose The main points, Important ideas or Every detail. Choose the card types: Question and answer, Fill in the blank and True or false.
  • Quiz: choose Easy, recall the key facts, Medium, connect the ideas or Hard, reason through tricky cases. Choose the question types: Multiple choice, Select all, True or false, Fill in the blank and Short answer.

Work through a plan

Each section has up to three parts. Do them in this order: Start reading, Start practice, then Take the quiz.

To finish a reading, select Mark as read. Gistr does not mark a reading as finished when you only scroll to the end.

Each section also has a menu. Use it to go to one part, to skip the section or to reset your progress. If you skip a section, you can select Add back to plan later. If you reset a section, its cards and questions start again as new, but your review history stays.

Set or change your exam date

  1. Open Study space and find your plan.
  2. Open the menu on the plan.
  3. Select Change exam date. If the plan has no date, select Set exam date.
  4. Choose the new date. It must be after today.
  5. Select Save.

When the date changes, Gistr moves your reviews. Cards that are due after the exam move to the last study day before it. Gistr also plans a final pass over your cards in the last 4 study days.

To remove the date, select Clear exam date. The plan then has no deadline.

Ask AI cannot change an exam date at this time. Use the plan menu.

Pause, archive or delete a plan

  • Pause plan: removes the cards of the plan from your review. Select Resume plan to bring them back. Their schedules stay the same.
  • Archive: hides the plan and removes its cards from your review. Select Restore plan to bring it back.
  • Delete plan: removes the plan and your progress in it. The source and the thread stay. If you are not sure, select Archive instead.

Practise flashcards

  1. Read the question and try to remember the answer.
  2. Select Reveal answer.
  3. Rate your answer: Again, Hard, Good or Easy.

Your rating sets when the card comes back. Each button shows the time, for example "tomorrow" or "in 6 days". Be honest. A correct rating gives you a better schedule.

To leave a card for now, select Skip card. This does not rate the card. You can also practise a card before it is due. This does not change when the card comes back.

Each card can also show more help: Why True, Broader Context and Examples.

Take a quiz

  1. Answer the question, then select Check answer.
  2. If you do not know the answer, reveal it.
  3. Read the result: Correct or Partly right, or read the correct answer.
  4. At the end, select Finish Quiz, then See results.

For a short answer, Gistr compares your answer with the source. It then shows what you Covered and what you Missed. In fill-in-the-blank questions, your spelling does not need to be exact.

Gistr schedules a Partly right answer as a wrong answer, so the question comes back sooner.

Your daily review and goal

Study space shows Due today and Coming up. Due today shows the next steps for today, up to three: your reviews, then a reading, then a quiz. Coming up only shows what is next.

Today's goal shows three rings: readings, cards and questions. The daily limits start at 2 readings, 30 cards and 15 questions. You can change them in Settings, under Study Space.

Streaks, days off and breaks

  • Streak goal: the default is 10 minutes of practice each day. You can choose 10 flashcards, 10 quizzes or the full practice goal. A change starts on the next day.
  • Rest passes: you get one pass for each 6 days on which you meet your goal, up to 2. Gistr uses a pass when you miss a study day.
  • Study days: choose the days on which you study. Cards that are due on a day off wait for the next study day. A day off does not break your streak.
  • Take a break: stop for up to 90 days. Your streak and reminders rest. You can still study if you want to.

If you come back after a long time, Gistr shows Welcome back. You can spread your late reviews over 3, 5 or 7 days. New material waits during this time.

Start from the chat

You can also start from Ask AI. Type your request in plain words, for example "quiz me on chapter 4" or "help me study this for my exam". Or open the + menu in the message box, select Tools, then Study.

Ask AI asks for the source if it needs to know, then your level. For a plan, it also asks for your exam date. A card then shows the progress. When the material is ready, open it from the card.

Ask AI can make new study material. At this time it cannot rate your cards, grade your quiz, or pause or delete a plan. Do these actions in Study space.

Reminders

Gistr can remind you in the app and by email, for example when your daily review is ready or when your exam is near. To change these reminders, open Settings, then Notifications. The Study options are Study reminders, Study sets and Study progress.

You get no digest during a break. On a day off, you only get exam and recap items.

Who can use it, and the cost

Study space is open to everyone. The Auto model is free. If you choose a different model, that model must be on your plan, and Gistr charges credits for the tokens that it uses. Gistr holds the credits first and gives back what it does not use.

Frequently asked questions

Open Study space, open the menu on your plan, select Change exam date, choose the new date and select Save. Gistr moves your reviews to fit the new date.

Your plans are in Study space, which you open from the sidebar of your home page. In a thread, select Study space in the toolbar on a computer. On a phone, select Study, or open More views.

You rated it Again, or it was due today. A card that you rate Again can come back once in the same sitting. Your other ratings bring it back after one day or more.

A plan or a set uses one source. A thread can hold many sources, so you can make material from each of them in the same thread.
