This presentation introduces a new model, "The Anatomy of a Design System," addressing common design system challenges: confusion about their purpose and unrealized benefits. The model structures design systems in layers (Foundations, Tokens, Core Systems, Components), each comprised of assets, processes, and documentation. This framework aims to improve clarity, consistency (across individual, departmental, and cultural levels), and efficiency (individual, departmental, and collaborative levels) by connecting brand, design, and development. Lack of clarity on 1. what to do it & how to do it 2. not fully realize the benefits of a design system Anatomy of a Design System What is an organization doing What makes up a design system Conceptual Assets Documentation Processes Impact Consistency Efficiency / Productivity Foundations The Foundations Layer is a subset of the organization's brand to be used in designing and developing digital interfaces. Tokens - single source of truth Codified the items identified foundations with various design decision Reason for using tokens consistent design ease of change multiplatform support Things you can Tokenize type color spacing elevation opacity radii volume borders timing Core systems The Core Systems Layer is a set of "building block" systems used to solve common interface challenges Examples iconography systems layout & grid systems theming systems color systems type scale systems animation systems Components The Components Layer contains the reusable parts of a digital interface Connect a brand or a solution offered by a brand to an audience through the ways of in-store advertising or digital experiences Design system sits for the brand to communicate with your audience Problem is we are trying to define them with out any context
