The Luray Caverns in Virginia house the Great Stalacpipe Organ, a unique lithophone. Created in the 1950s by Leland Sprinkle, it uses stalactites as resonating elements, each fitted with a steel bolt and electric guitar pickup to amplify their vibrations. Sprinkle carefully selected and tuned stalactites to create musical notes, resulting in a massive, naturally reverberant instrument played via a console. The organ's unique construction and the slow growth of stalactites raise the possibility of it eventually going out of tune.
